Production... but make it fashion!
Within the first month as a photo producer in New York, I was on the phone with Elle McPherson in Australia. Holding my breathe so I could hear her every word. Marking up the campaign photos, and hoping to dear life that I didn’t mishear curve for cleavage. I was soon producing beauty editorials with Allure. Fashion stories for Harpers Bazaar UK and Ad campaigns for Michael Kors. I was in it, the very thick of the fashion industry with not a rolodex in sight!
I often forget to pause and take a moment to appreciate how hard I work. The everyday hustle can often create a blind spot when it comes to saying, “You did a great job Tash!” - so easy to type, yet so hard to remember to say it to yourself.
As I go back and look at all the work I have been a part of, created and/or produced. It still feels a little uncomfortable saying it out loud but yes "I did that!" - The truth is I showed up everyday to learn from my mistakes. These experiences added to the growth I longed for and feared at the same time.
3 Lessons that taught me how to think on my feet without losing my balance
LESSON 1: LISTEN TO MOTHER NATURE
When you find yourself watching the news and realize that the volcanic smoke cloud engulfing Venezuela, will prevent the photographers’ digital tech from traveling to Paris for an Ad campaign. - Your intuition will be your best friend and hire local creatives that’s what they are there for!
LESSON 2: FOCUS ON THE MAIN GOAL. ANYTHING ELSE CAN BE SOLVED WITH A CREDIT CARD.
When the caterer never shows up to set and you have the global editorial director and a photo crew to feed. Wheew chilllaaay! - Try to remember everything works out the way it’s meant to, because you make sure you do your very best.
LESSON 3: WALKING AWAY
Walking away from the environment that you thrive in but isn’t good for you anymore, can be the hardest to thing to do. Moving away from producing editorials now feels like the biggest mic drop of my life. Because nothing is worth disrupting your peace of mind and ability to function as a human being.
